Weekend Reflections

We took a ride recently to the Amish bulk food store, and on the way pass by this large feed mill. On the back side is a beautiful lake with this waterfall leading to a stream that flows under the road. The water level in the lake is fairly low right now, so there isn't much water flowing over the dam. You can see the reflections of the grain silos in the water, and if you look closely right on top of the stones on the dam is a flock of domestic geese resting in the afternoon sun.

Fridays Fences

Out and about last week, I drove by this adorable fence, and having seen it a couple years ago, I was hoping it was still kept looking so nice. It borders the sidewalk in front of the first Presbyterian church in Sugar Grove, Pennsylvania and this church has the longest continuing congregation in Warren County, Penna dating back to the mid 1800's. Each year they plant different flowers by this fence, so you never know what you might find..
Happy Friday, and if you would like to see more fences, click on over to see Jan at http://lifeaccordingtojanandjer.blogspot.com Have a wonderful weekend. We will be busy as beavers splitting wood...

Thursday Mish Mash

Wow, what a surprise I found today. Gathering eggs this afternoon, I reached in one of the nests and pulled out this gigantic white egg! It's actually as big as a duck egg, and we have no ducks.
I put a row of our eggs for comparison, beginning with the whopper egg, then jumbo, extra large, large, medium, and bantam. We don't get very many of these big ones, and I'm sure it will be a double "ocre" as our youngest granddaughter Jalyn calls them.
This male Cardinal stopped by my feeder this morning, and he looks terrible going through his moult..
The wild Asters are especially beautiful this year. They are everywhere, and I really like the color.
Happen to see this Amish lad and his father heading out to the corn field driving their horses and wagon. It's the time of year when all the farmers are chopping and cutting corn for the cows.
Along that same road we saw a few autumn leaves. This is a really pretty road with lots Amish farms, and I'll post some in future days.
It has been a dreary day all day, and the temps never got out of the low 60's. Maybe some sun tomorrow. Have a good rest of the week.

Wild Bird Wednesday

Taking a ride to the lake looking for any migrating birds I did see this Great blue heron. In the background you can see lots of Canada geese.
This guy was kind enough to hang around long enough for me to get a couple shots.
A few Cormorants were putting on a show too. These guys have been here all summer.
In the shallow water there were a few ducks paddling around looking for something to eat. I can't wait for the migrating ducks to show up as well as the Bonaparte gulls. They really put on a good show diving for fish.
If you want to see more birds just click on http://paying-ready-attention-gallery.blogspot.com and thanks to Stewart for this cool meme.

Barn Charm

For barn charm this week we live where there are lots of Amish farms, and this is the barn from one of the more well to do farms. If you look closely you can see the husband, wife and a youngster are splitting wood. There are also 2 generators sitting in the barn door, and a solar collector on the barn roof. I have been noticing more of these recently, and they are used to charge batteries.
Have a good rest of the week, and do click on http://bluffareadaily.blogspot.com to see more barns.

Macro Monday

For Macro Monday, you might like to meet Mugmon. I found him out in our back yard this morning sitting under his favorite mushroom, and he seems to be pondering a secret he has just heard from one of his gnome friends. Maybe it has to do with when we are getting our first snowfall.
He does look like he's keeping a secret doesn't he??
Happy Macro Monday, and click on over to http://lisaschaos.com to see more close ups.

Sunday

Yep, today Fall is showing her colors around here. Not much yet, but just enough to make us believe that summer is really over.
Son Steve came over today and doing most of the work, we cleaned out the main chicken pen, and now it is all ready for winter. Sweet smelling and dry. All the nesting places have fresh straw too, so the hens will have a clean soft place to lay their eggs. We change the straw every couple of weeks, and the blue pan you see on the floor contains calcium which helps keep the egg shells hard, and the chickens will eat it when they need it.
The Mums are so pretty this year. I always buy several, but never have good luck getting them to come back the next year.
It's been a cold, rainy day, but we've had so many hot dry days this summer, we really aren't complaining.
Have a wonderful rest of the weekend.
