Ruby Tuesday

I searched today for something red, but came up with nothing, so thought I would show a very small part of Gary's train layout. This layout has LOTS of red.
Happy Ruby Tuesday and if you click on http://workofthepoet.blogspot.com/ you can see this meme that Mary/the teach keeps going.

Macro Monday

I found this cute little Slate colored Junco right outside my computer room window. If you look closely you can see a gleam in his eye. Perhaps he has found a mate??
Have a happy Macro Monday everyone, and if you click on over to Lisa's site http://lisaschaos.com you can see lots more close ups.

The weeks End

Saturday afternoon I get this excited phone call from our son that lives 2 houses away that there is a possum in their yard up on the bird feeder pole. I grabbed my camera and ran down the road. Here is what I found. This critter was at the top of the feeder pole just waiting to raid the bird feeder. Check that back foot... This morning early began as a beautiful day, but before long it became overcast and next came the snow. Thankfully just flurries.
Friday we had 11" of snow and through all the snow and high winds the poor turkeys managed to show up for some corn. They were very spooky and kept checking for anything strange. Sorry about the poor quality. Shooting through the snow covered window wasn't all that great.

When they finished eating they all went out to our back yard and settled down next to a Spruce tree out of the wind.

Of course you know who, Mr. Cooper's hawk, spent the day here too, just watching and waiting. One strike that I saw, but no dinner here. It was really windy.

A ride to the great Blue heron nesting area, and they were all snow covered. We'll be going back after the birds return.

I hope you are having a wonderful week-end.

Weekend Reflections

It's not easy to find reflections now that we are still having so much snow.
This reflection is looking at the clock in our living room with a reflection of the front window.
You can see the lamp hanging in the window, the curtain, and out to the snow in the yard.

Skywatch Friday

We are beginning to get a few more days of sun lately, and this shot shows some of the exploding clouds that show up living not far off the southern shores of Lake Erie.
Happy Skywatch Friday. everyone, and click on http://skyley.blogspot.com to see what the gang has done with this meme.

This week, and more snow

Oh dear, more snow this week, as a matter of fact 11" on Sunday night. Just when we had tons of it cleared away from the house.
Sunday afternoon on a drive past this Amish house shows church is still going on as you can see by all the buggies. A little later I spied some deer resting beneath some underbrush,
Here is one doe that had her nose buried in the snow searching for grass. She didn't hang around very long though and ran off.

On our way to watch trains we always pass this adorable little country house. I never see any one there, and I would love to just sit on the porch and look at the beautiful scenery. Someone takes very good care of the house, and plants beautiful flowers in the Spring.

I participated in the Great Backyard Bird Count this year again, and I had 8 Cardinals all at one time.
This is our front yard after the 11" snow fall, and now I hear there is another storm coming tomorrow night! Oh joy!

World Bird Wednesday

The ugly European Starling really isn't ugly at all if you look closely. I love the pattern of these feathers, and how many of you out there get dizzy just watching this guy eating suet upside down...
Happy World Bird Wednesday, and it you click on http://pineriverreview.blogspot.com/ to see lots more birds.

Ruby Tuesday

Since I have been participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count these past 4 days, I thought I would show the 2 Red-bellied Woodpeckers that have been visiting my feeders. The first one is the male. The Mrs. takes her turn at the suet.

Macro Monday

It's Macro Monday again. How time flies!
This is a very cold Blue jay. Hopefully we will get a break from this snowy weather for more than a day real soon!

Weeks End

Last Thursday morning we got to our train watching spot just in time to see the Amtrak passenger train traveling from Chicago to Buffalo, and New York City race by at 60 miles per hour. These 4 turkeys have been making visits twice a day this winter to eat beneath my feeders.
Finding some open water on Findley Lake, I found a few Mallards that spent the winter.

I'm participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count, and added this male Red bellied woodpecker to my list.

Of course there are always the Downey woodpeckers, and Cardinals.

Yesterday after 2 days of warmer temps, and lots of melting going on the creek behind our house became jammed. The water got very high, and as of today it's still high, and the jam hasn't broken. In this picture the water you see in the foreground is the creek overflow. The main channel is the grey area you see in front of the white hay field in the background. The temps have fallen into the 20's and now this jam won't break till we get warmer weather again.

More birds to add to the GBBC are these Mourning doves.
Have a wonderful and warm Sunday.

Weekend Reflections

On Valentine's day our family went to supper at Perkin's restaurant. It was so great that we could all spent the time together, and good that we had enough leftovers for lunch the next day!LOL
Happy Weekend reflections everyone. I hope you all had a good week.

Skywatch Friday

Last night the sky was clear, and the temperatures were moderating. How welcome was this. The moon is almost full, and will be Friday night, but we have rain predicted, so we probably won't see it.
Happy Skywatch Friday everybody. Be sure to click on over to http://skyley.blogspot.com/ to see more sky shots.

Just an average Wednesday

Nothing special, just a few pictures from around home.
A really cool moon shot tonight. This opossum was eating underneath one of my birdfeeders yesterday afternoon. They shouldn't be seen in the daytime.
Mrs. Cardinal seems to be napping. Remember yesterday it was a nice warm day and she is no doubt soaking up the sun.

The greedy Blue Jay hogs the suet.

I spotted this little doe on one of our trails yesterday afternoon.

This little Chickadee says a prayer before lunch.

Finally, I have seen this Cardinal several times, and he has no tail. The bird has no trouble flying, and I wonder if he got caught by Mr. Cooper's hawk but managed to get away?
Have a wonderful Thursday.

More warm weather for a few days. Oh how nice!

World Bird Wednesday

Winter is still hanging on here, and I was surprised today to see this Great-Blue heron standing on the ice on the pond. It was a beautiful sunny day, and there was some warmth in that old sun as this bird stayed on the ice for over 2 hours soaking up all the heat.. Too bad I couldn't get better shots, but there was lots of branches and a chain link fence in the way.

Ruby Tuesday

The ice fishing season will soon come to an end, but for now the ice is still thick enough. Later this week it will warm up, and probably it won't be safe to venture out.
Happy Ruby Tuesday, and do click on over to Mary/the teach' site http://workofthepoet.blogspot.com/ to see lots more RED.

Macro Monday

Earlier in the week when I posted my greenhouse, I failed to show one of my favorite Orchids.
This one is about 2" and is called "Lady of the Night". The flower isn't all that spectacular, but the fragrance is unbelievable. It smells just like a Gardenia, and is only detectable at night. When there are several blooming at once, you can smell them all over the house. In the wild they would be able to attract night flying insects for pollination.
Happy Macro Monday and if you click on http://lisaschaos.com you can see lots more close ups.

Sundial and Feathers

We were having a real angry blizzard Saturday morning. As soon as I put out seed it would get covered up by all the snow. I put some in this sundial bowl, and there was plenty of arguing going on. Sometimes they all got along.
Then sometimes NOT!

An outsider tries to get on board.

The "Boss" tries to shoo him away.
Finally the piggy Blue Jays leave.

Cardinals Rule!

A new "Boss".

More outsiders fly in for a landing and good food.

Then of course the "Boss" returns, and warns everybody to "buzz off".

Mr. Cardinal watches from the tree.

They he attempts to get seed again.

But the "Boss" is watching, and promptly chases Mr. Cardinal away.

We ended up with almost 7" of snow today. At the end of the day the sky began to clear, and the sun shone. Unbelievable!
Hope everyone is having a wonderful week-end.
