Wild Bird Wednesday

It's been a lousy week weather wise, and I haven't been anywhere to take pictures of birds. There have been a few regulars at my feeders, and I do have this small flock of Pine Siskins that have been hanging around. I don't remember seeing them this early in the season. Maybe they are sticking around till all threat of the hurricane is gone??? We are safe here, with only moderate winds, and the creek got very high, but we didn't have any water damage. We lost one tree, but it was a Sumac on one of the trails, so no big loss. We have plenty of Sumac.
Have a wonderful rest of the week, and sorry about the small font. I didn't catch it till I was done with this post :~( Do click on http://paying-ready-attention-gallery.blogspot.com to see what Stewart has done with this fun bird meme.

Barn Charm

This is one of the Amish communities near us, and you can see on some of the house roofs they have installed solar panels. They use these to charge batteries.
We made it through the hurricane fairly well. The creek behind our home is very high, but we have little water in the basement. All the schools are closed in the area, and plenty of power out too.
Have a great day.

Macro Monday

Since it has been raining here all weekend, I thought I'd try some raindrop shots. Here is a close up of the water reflection on one of our Spruce trees.
Happy Monday, and if you are in the path of"Sandy" take care.

A cold and raining Sunday

Since it is a miserable day here, cold, raining and as we wait for whatever "Sandy" will dump on us, I decided to post some pictures that I took last week when we had a few beautiful days.
This is a shot of the Mum farm about 20 miles from us. They have acres and acres of gorgeous flowers. Some you can buy at their stand, and also you can dig up your own.
Another shot of the Mums.
I took a walk down by the creek, and the beavers have been busy this Fall. They have built 2 dams, and as soon as the water gets high it will wash away all the hard work they have done.
I was lucky enough to see this female Belted-kingfisher, and she didn't stick around very long and as soon as she spotted me she flew away.
Here is one of the trees that the beavers have cut down. There are quite a few, and this one fell partly onto the road. This stump is about 7" in diameter, and they never even took the branches.
OK, enough for now. Have a wonderful day, and do stay tuned to all the weather reports.

Weekend Reflections

I can't believe it's the weekend again. Driving past the neighboring town, I spotted a few reflections in the local pond, and will be posting more in the coming weeks.
Happy weekend to everyone, and if you are in the path of Sandy, do take care!

Friday's Fences

My post for Friday's Fences isn't really about the fence, but what's behind the fence. I LOVE Alpacas. Love the barn too.
Happy Friday everyone. Have a wonderful weekend.

Wild Bird Wednesday

I've seen a few birds this week, and I'd better get them posted before they get lost in cyber space.
This  male Red-bellied woodpecker has been hanging around for a few days.
Taking a ride around Chautauqua lake I spotted these Coots paddling around the shore line. I don't usually see these till Spring migration.
They are skittish most of the time, but these guys let me get fairly close.
This Bald eagle has been around our area for a while now, and you can find him hanging around the creek that runs behind our house.
It was a very windy day, and this guy was doing a bit of scratching.
This was a real find for me. A couple female Hooded mergansers, and one has just caught a fish. Another spooky duck, and I felt so lucky to get close enough to get a couple shots.
This one had just come up to the surface from a dive, and you can see the water droplets on the bill and on her back.

Barn Charm

A couple weeks ago I posted this Amish barn raising after the old barn burned down. Someone was burning trash too close to the barn, and caught it on fire.
Here is the finished barn. I had a couple comments asking if I would post the barn when it was done. I have an idea this barn will be used for hay storage.

Friday's Fences

A couple weeks ago I told about a very generous man from Erie, Penna that had gone around the city fastening American flags to so many fences. I've seen them all over, and this is what they look like, and there are 1000's of them.

Friday's fences

When ever I see fences like this it reminds me of the time we went to the Yankee Peddler Craft Festival in Canal Fulton, Ohio. A vendor there was making awesome walking sticks from these old type fence posts.

Wild Bird Wednesday

Here it is Wednesday all ready, and time for more birds. I was so surprised to see this male Red-bellied woodpecker at my feeders. I usually don't see him and the Mrs. till the winter months, but I'll take it as he is one of my favorites. I did see a White-crowned sparrow the same day, but I couldn't get my camera focused quick enough, and it flew away. They don't seem to show up here till around February or March, so I don't know what's going on...
I hope everyone is having a great day. It is miserable here. Cold, raining, and windy. Typical October weather I guess.

Barn Charm

Driving out in Amish country a couple days ago, we spot a barn raising. This isn't like most barn raising's because there aren't that many workers here, and they are using a large crane to hoist the rafters... The old barn burned earlier this summer after someone burning trash in a burn barrel too close to the barn caught it on fire. It was completely destroyed. No animals were lost.
Not sure what is going on, but 4 days later not much progress. Usually they would have the barn finished by now. I'll keep checking on it.

Sunday and Lots of Fall Pictures

Fall is here in all it's awesome glory this year. It arrived quickly and without much fanfare, but now that it is here, and is more spectacular that in many years, it won't last long, so I am posting a few pictures today from around our area and they all were taken by our almost 10 year old granddaughter Becca. Becca is interested in photography, and I think she has done a wonderful job..She her parents and sister Jalyn all took a ride Friday afternoon to see this beauty.
Yesterday afternoon driving by a school yard, I spotted this small herd of deer grazing not far from the road. They seemed not to notice the traffic either which leads me to believe they come here often. If they are smart they will stay here through out hunting season, as there are many houses nearby..
I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. It has been cold and wet here.

Weekend Reflections

At a favorite place by the lake where we sometimes eat lunch, I usually am looking for ducks to photograph, and on this particular day I noticed this reflection of the dock in the water.
Happy weekend to everybody, and click on over to http://weekendreflection.blogspot.com to see lots more reflections.

Friday's Fences

Around our area it seems I am seeing lots more American flags everywhere. I liked looking at these on this fence. There is a gentleman from Erie, Pennsylvania that has gone around the town and placed 1000's of these flags on many of the bridges, and chain link fences around schools, and the county. It is very impressive, and this man deserves so much credit.
I'll try to get pictures for next weeks fences.

Wild Bird Wednesday

It was a dark, damp, and drizzly day Tuesday when we ate lunch by the lake, but I was able to capture a couple shots of a small flock of Coots paddling around in the water. I think migration has begun as I don't see these guys around here in the summer.
Have a wonderful day, and click on http://paying-ready-attention-gallery.blogspot.com to see lots more wild birds. A big thank you to Stewart for hosting this fun meme too!!

Barn Charm

For Barn Charm this week, I have to tell you I am a bit concerned about this barn and the cows laying under that left hangover. It doesn't look too sturdy to me.
