Skywatch Friday

All the snow we had last night almost melted today, but - sigh- we're supposed to get more tonight.

Earlier this week we did have a couple beautiful days. Soon these fields will be sporting corn and hay.

Happy Skywatch, and do click on over to http://skyley.blogspot.com/ to see lots more sky shots.

Winter just won't give up!

Here it is one day from April and as I post this blog it is snowing! Yes, the ground is covered, and the weather folks say we might get a couple inches by morning. At any rate it was a beautiful day, and I got some pictures of this Common Merganser pair. A little farther on the Allegheny river near Warren ,Pa we found the Mute Swan pair. I posted pictures of these two last Spring with their cygnets, and they are again sitting on eggs, but on this day they were both in the water, and I had treats for them

Near home an Amish farmer spreads manure on the fields of his farm.
It's maple syrup time here, and lots of the sugar Maple trees have the buckets hanging on them.
Near that corn crib where I always see the deer, another small herd was there for a snack.
Along "our" creek the Beavers have been busy even though the water is still high. You can see they haven't taken any of the branches yet.
My oldest cat Maggie, will be 24 years old this summer. She is still in fairly good health, and loves sitting next to the house soaking up some sun.

World Bird Wednesday

Taking a ride this afternoon to Barcelona Harbor on Lake Erie, I spotted quite a large flock of Lesser Scaups. Most likely migrating through the area. Click on over to http://pineriverreview.blogspot.com/ to see lots more bird shots.

Ruby Tuesday

I just don't have much to offer for Ruby Tuesday this week except the striking red eye of the male Wood duck. I was able to find a pair this afternoon on a stream in the woods. Happy Ruby Tuesday and do click on over to http://workofthepoet.blogspot.com/ to see mary/the teach' site. There are lots more red shots there.

Macro Monday

On a day last week after an over night freezing rain, we took a ride to the Peninsula on Lake Erie, and saw lots of ice everywhere. Happy Macro Monday and do click on over to see what Lisa has done with this meme. http://lisaschaos.com. You can see lots more close-ups.

The Hometown Gang

Here are some of the hometown gang. Not all of them, but some that come out every day.
Mr. Red-bellied woodpecker tries to get into the sunflower feeder, but it's really made for the smaller birds. Of course Mr. Cardinal is always here. Just one pair now. The winter Cardinals have all gone onto their own nesting grounds.
Mr. Red-bellied woodpecker again in full sun.

Plenty of Chickadees too

All of a sudden I have lots, and lots of House finches.

On a recent ride, next to this old broken down barn were so many Muscovy ducks.

Also a different pair of ducks known as Domestic Mallards
. These two were in a little town stream near us.
Another sunny day, but oh so cold. Tonight down near 0 deg. again.
Can't put away the long johns just yet!

Weekend Reflections

With the snow almost gone, we are desperately hoping for some warmer weather. This pond is home to lots and lots of turtles.
Happy Weekend Reflections, and if you click on http://newtowndailyphoto.blogspot.com to see lots more reflections.

Skywatch Friday

It was such a truly beautiful day, but very cold still. Last night we got snow and some places freezing rain.
Thanks to all responsible for this great meme. Click on over to http://skyley.blogspot.com to see more sky shots.

Thursday and more cold and snow

Well, they say Spring is here, but in words only. We got 3" of heavy wet snow last night, and maybe some freezing rain over night..
I was surprised yesterday afternoon by this female Redpoll. Earlier in the winter I saw some too, but they didn't stay. I don't imagine this one will hang around either, but at least I did get some pictures this time.
There are a few Song Sparrows still hanging around too. They will be moving on soon.

A cold wet Mourning dove rests on my weather station.

Now that the snow is all gone, look what the Moles have done to our back yard. I don't remember ever seeing it this bad, and it will take lots of lawn rolling.

Daylillies are popping up, so I know there is hope out there that Spring can't be that far off.

World Bird Wednesday

Here it is Wednesday again.
This week I have had the pleasure of spending some time watching the White breasted nuthatch. They are such fun to try and keep track of as they scurry up and down the trees.
Happy World Bird Wednesday, and do click on over to http://pineriverreview.blogspot.com to see lots more birds.

Ruby Tuesday

This might be one of the strangest Ruby Tuesday's ever, but amid all the mud and muck, the springing of new plant life occurs . The Skunk cabbage still flourishes. Even with a small bit of red for us to see.
Happy Ruby Tuesday everybody, and click on over to http://workofthepoet.blogspot.com/ to see what Mary has done with this meme.

Macro Monday

It's time for Macro Monday, and I wanted to share with you a beautiful wood burned plaque my good friend Cindy surprised me with today. I have a few books featuring carousel horses along with much history, and Cindy had borrowed them a while back. Throughout the winter she worked on this piece, and gave it to me this afternoon. I LOVE it! Thanks so much Cindy.
I have to give it back just for a little while because she will be entering the plaque in an art show this Spring. GOOD LUCK Cin.

Another week-end.

Up in this roof overhang a female house sparrow checks it out for a possible nesting place. This is the creek out behind our house. The water rose lots over the past few days due to all the snow melt. Thank goodness we didn't have any rain with it.

I am able to walk the "upper" trail and I found a spot of green. Moss with a tiny leaf.

Usually everyday a large flock of blackbirds stop by for a snack. Here are a few Brown headed Cowbirds.

This guy appeared in the back yard this afternoon. What a fat critter he is. Ground hog, wood chuck, or whistle pig, they are kind of cute, but oh the holes they dig!

I was hoping to get a good shot at the big moon last night, but no dice. Way too cloudy.

Ducks, ducks, and more ducks.

We saw lots of ducks on a recent trip to Lake Erie.
Buffleheads A few Canada geese on the waters edge. I see they are beginning to pair up too.
Taking a bath.

On a small pond I found one lonely male Hooded Merganser.

Redhead male.

More Redheads

Canvasbacks and Redhead.

Female Ringed-neck duck.

Lesser Scaup.

All there ducks were in one place except that Merganser. The wind was blowing pretty hard, and they were quite far away, so these shots aren't the best.
