Weekend Reflections

This is the Perry Monument on Presque Isle, Lake Erie, Pennsylvania.
You can read about it here.

The Perry monument, a 101-foot obelisk at Crystal Point on Presque Isle, was built in 1926 to honor Oliver Hazard Perry, Master Commandant, who was appointed both station and squadron commander of a new American Lake Erie fleet being built at Presque Isle/Erie in 1812/1813. This fleet’s assignment was to engage the British, who controlled the Great Lakes, and with luck gain control of the lakes.

Friday's Fences

I love this fence! We live is ski country, and what else would you expect. LOL
No real snow yet, but I do hope the ski resort gets it's wish this winter. Last winter was not good. At least 100" less than the year before.

Wild Bird Wednesday

Driving home today from dropping off our newspapers for recycling, we stopped for a bite of lunch near the railroad tracks hoping to see trains, and I did see this first year Red-tailed hawk sitting up high in a tree nearby. I'm not used to seeing them sit still, and it took off as soon as I got these 2 shots. So what else is new?
Didn't see any trains either. Bummer!
Have a great rest of the week, and click over to http://paying-ready-attention-gallery.blogspot.com to see lots more birds. Thanks to Stewart for this cool meme.

Barn Charm

Traveling around I found this teeny barn, and another one close to the road. Can't imagine what was in it, but I thought it was cute.

Sunday Morning

It has been a really busy week getting ready for Thanksgiving, so I haven't been taking too many pictures.
We drove by the local Amish school the other day in time to see the children all outside playing.  They play on the swings, play baseball, and mostly just run around.
Still looking for Tundra swans, we took a ride to the peninsula on Lake Erie last week, and I did find 6 that were feeding in the bay waters. I'm still waiting however and keeping my eyes and ears to the sky waiting for that familiar whooo, whooo, whooo as they fly over head. I have my video camera ready to capture that sound that I love to hear.
I was able to find a pair of Mute swans too on the bay. There is a pair that will stay here all winter, and I'm not sure if this is that pair or not.
Driving around on the lake side this is one of the many breakers they have to protect the beaches from the strong winds and crashing waves. On the day we were there I saw 100's of Ringed-billed gulls sitting on the rocks.

On top in the middle of the rocks is this Great black-backed gull. He is so much bigger than all the rest, and from a distance it looks much like a Bald eagle until you zoom in on him. They normally winter farther East than here, so it might just be passing through.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We did with our family, and now it's onto Christmas. No shopping on Black Friday for me though. I don't like crazy!!

Weekend Reflections

A few weeks ago, I was present to take pictures of some of the area fireman as they participated in a Firefighter#2 class at the training center in Jamestown, New York. Our son is part of this unique class, and on this day all the water from the fire hoses provided me with a reflection opportunity.
Have a wonderful weekend. Click on over to http://weekendreflection.blogspot.com to see lots more reflections.

Barn Charm

For Barn Charm this week, I spotted this poor old barn with a silo that is about to fall down. I see they have a cable keeping it in place, and I also wondered why the barn is so close to the road.
Happy Tuesday, and if you click on over to http://bluffareadaily.blogspot.com to see lots more interesting barns

Weekend Reflections

There is a lovely little lake about 5 miles from home, and we drive by often this time of the year looking for migrating Tundra swans. The last time this week proved great for a reflection picture showing "down town". PS, No swans yet..

Friday's Fences

Stopping at McDonald's for a bite to eat this afternoon, I spotted this fence while waiting in line at the drive in speakers. The fence has a purpose. Directly on the other side of the fence is the main line for the CSX railroad, and the fence is supposed to dull the sound as the trains roll by when you're giving your order. Guess what-- It doesn't work .

Wild Bird Wednesday

I don't have too much to add this week. I did see this immature Cooper's hawk this afternoon, way up high in a tree in our back yard. As soon as the weather changes, they will arrive, and all my feeder birds will be lunch if they aren't on guard...

Also earlier this week I photographed this Double-crested Cormorant swimming and fishing in the Lake Erie harbor at Barcelona, New York.

Barn Charm

This Fall on one of our drives, I spotted this very long barn with an unusual roof . I thought it would qualify for barn charm. After a beautiful weekend, it is pouring tonight, and the temperature has dropped nearly 30 deg. That white stuff might be making an appearance. sigh.

Weekend Reflections

Well, here it is the weekend, and I'm here with my water reflections again. There are just so many Canada geese around where we live, and it's not difficult to find some .
Happy weekend, and click over to http://weekendreflection.blogspot.com to see more reflections.

Friday's Fences

I have driven past this fence many times on our way to watch trains, but since it is on a busy highway I rarely got a chance to take a picture with no one following me. Finally last Tuesday presto! Clear behind our van. I love this kind of fence and the grape vines behind just make it unique.

Bright and Sunny Thursday

Driving by one of the local Amish schools the other day, the children were just on their way out to play.
Soon lots more came out, but it must have been too cold, because they all went right back inside.
Also driving by the pond in a neighbring town I spotted a group of Ring-billed gulls resting on the ice. Not all the water is frozen, but will soon be, although we are promised warmer weather by the weekend.
The other side of the pond is a stream, and lots of Canada geese hang out here.
Then along the harbor at Barcelona, New York, on Lake Erie it was windy and was a bit rough this day. The gulls were finding something to eat on the shore, and I did see some fishing Cormorants too.
A sunny day today, and even though it is cold, we are enjoying it to the fullest.
Take care everyone, and prayers are sent to all on the East coast in this latest bout with Mother Nature.

Wild Bird Wednesday

Taking a ride to Lake Erie earlier this week I spotted some geese I had never seen before. Checking my Sibley's I see they are Pale-bellied Brant geese. A new lifer for me too.  They winter on the East coast, and don't normally get this far inland. I'm wondering if hurricane Sandy had something to do with it??

Barn Charm

Last Friday I posted this very unusual "fence" on Friday's Fences. This particular section is part of a long fence bordering the Pennsylvania Dept. of Highway buildings in Meadville, Pennsylvania. The fence is all made from discarded road signs. I saved this one out to post today for Barn Charm.
If you want to see more of the "fence" just scroll back to my Friday Fences post.

Weekend Reflections

Well, when it has been raining for a week, there isn't much to photograph except water.
On the lake 5 miles from here lots, and lots of geese spend the day.

Friday's Fences

This fence is probably the most artistic fence I have ever seen. It is along a very busy highway, and surrounds the Pennsylvania Dept. of Highway in Meadville, Pennsylvania. The entire fence, and I'm sorry I didn't get a picture of the length, is all made from discarded highway signs. Very unusual indeed.
Check out the bird in front.
