SkyWatch Friday

This archway window is the top of a double door in the home/ beauty shop of the gal that does my hair. I just love sitting in this room looking out to the woods, and up to the sky at the beautiful trees.
Thanks to all responsible for hosting this site. Click on http://skyley.blogspot.com/ to see more great SkyWatch spots. My regular post for today is below.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

This decoration is in my front bay window. I took a walk on our trails this afternoon, and there is this one tree that has this fuzzy white vine growing all over it, and I have no idea what it is, but I think it's pretty.
I put peanuts out on my feeders today, and it did bring the Blue jays. This guy was high up in the tree, but still keeping an eye on me.

We drove back to that dirt road where we saw the Bittersweet a couple days ago. There were actually some pretty leaves to see even though the area got around 7" of snow that day. PS, I got myself some Bittersweet too, and found 2 more vines with plenty of berries. I'll remember this for next year. I used them in my arrangement in the bay window around the base of the big pumpkin.

Indian summer is here. It will be much warmer today, and we will be enjoying it. Maybe out for a walk on the Nature Preserve one more time before the BIG snows hit. Have a wonderful and safe Halloween.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Good Morning all. It was a blustery day and we have about 2" of snow. Towns farther to the south got much more. The old Indians call this Squaw winter. When this is finished we'll get Indian summer, and the temperatures could reach the upper 60's. Won't that be nice? The Indians gathered one more raiding party before winter during this time when there was no snow on the ground and their enemies couldn't track them back to their camps.
This was our back yard when it all started.
Driving down the road to look for pumpkins. At this point the snow wasn't sticking.
This is the Bittersweet bush/ shrub where I took the shot that is in my header. I just love Bittersweet for holiday decorations, and we found this growing along side a dirt road out in the "boonies". I might have to go back there and snip some. I do have my own growing, but it doesn't have any berries. Behind this bush was a huge one in the woods, but no way to get to it.
Driving home I spotted a couple of barns. This one apparently has no one to love it.
This one is in better condition, and sits beside a large corn field that has yet to be harvested.
Finally this barn is about 1 mile from us. It is a huge complex, and very modern. They are the ones that use the liquid manure called "slurry", and when it's spread on the fields, the entire countryside smells BAD for days!

Watery Wednesday

This shot is 30 miles across Lake Erie of a power plant in Canada. We were high up on a hill, and quite often see this view if the skies are clear

Ruby Tuesday

It's Ruby Tuesday again, and these 4 pumpkins want to wish you all Happy Halloween, and of course Happy Ruby Tuesday.
Thanks to mary/the teach for hosting this fun site. To see lots more Ruby Tuesday photos click on the ladybug on the side bar.

It's Monday!

BOO !Well, here is is Monday again. The week-end was cool, and oh so windy. Yesterday afternoon we built a new door for the chicken coop, since a strong wind ripped the old one off it's hinges. Now the girls will be toasty once more in the cold weather.
I notice the winter birds are beginning to come back. This Downy gal is here all the time.
The Nuthatch pair has returned.
Lots of apples on this white Crab apple tree.

We checked on the beaver dam, and see that it has gotten partially washed out by all the recent rain.
Now that the trees are nearly bare of leaves I see that there is a bird nest way up high in this Willow tree. I have no idea what it might be from, but I suspect a Crow.
OK, that's all for now. I have lots of computer work to do today. I am making a DVD for the fire department's annual banquet. It will contain memories from the past, and some photos from the controlled burns that we have done this summer. I want to bake bread too. I get domestic on days when I can't get outside. The sky is darkening in the West as I sit here, and the winds are howling, BUT the sun is out too. The weather folks say snow is on the way. Oh well, we're ready.
Have a wonderful day all, and keep that camera handy.

Slow Walk

It was a cool, wet, and windy day here on Saturday. In the afternoon we took a slow walk around the perimeter of our property. There is so much more to see if you don't hurry. Not many birds around, and we didn't see any ducks or other wildlife except Azrael of course.
On a fallen branch is this neat lichen. I think these are Spiny Puffballs. I have a book on Mushrooms, but my word there are so many. These are growing under one of the Blue Spruce trees.
This pine cone has yet to open. You can tell we have no squirrels around because we have loads of pine cones still on the trees.

Red berries from the Hawthorne tree.
More red berries and this time they grow on the weedy Nightshade, Solanum dulcamara, which the book says is actually a member of the potato family. You learn something new every day!
A couple more pine cones still in the tree and unopened.
More lichen on a fallen tree branch. We've had plenty of rain, and you can find these everywhere. I have more to post tomorrow. I didn't realize how beautiful they really are until you view them up close.
Water droplets on a blade of grass.
Gary calls this Bird Lunch. We still have some of the red Delicious apples in the tree , and the birds love them.
That's all for today folks. The weather is deteriorating, and has dropped 4º in the past hour from 42º to 38º. The weather people say snow and possibly lake effect snow coming our way. We live smack dab in the middle of the snow belt off Lake Erie, so we can always expect something. Have a wonderful day, and do keep your camera handy...

Birds, Birds, and More Birds!

I am so amazed every year at this time at the migration of birds. You can see several starlings for instance in your yard at any one time. During migration you might see hundreds! Now how in the world did they all get together. Do they start with just a few, then go yard to yard to pick up more followers, and so on till the numbers reach into the hundreds???
At any rate it's mind boggling.
On this particular day these birds were in the trees next to our property, making a terrible racket. They seemed to be all Red-winged Blackbirds. There were far more than is shown here.
Coming in for a landing.
Yesterday morning at 07:15. A sign of things to come!
We spotted these Starlings on a dirt road. Again there were hundreds of them. There didn't appear to be anything on the road for them to eat. Wonder why they were there?
A car passed by, and they all flew into a yard only to return later to the road.
In the trees, on the wires, and in the air. Alfred Hitchcock eat your heart out!
Here they are in someones front yard. Be careful where you step!
OK, enough for the birds! It's going to be a yucky day for sure. Right now it's 48º and raining. Snow on the way. Have a wonderful day all.

SkyWatch Friday

This was taken a couple weeks ago one evening just before dusk. I couldn't believe all the shapes in this cloudy sky.
Thanks to all who hosted this super site. Click on http://skyley.blogspot.com/ to see tons more great skies.
Be sure to click on the photo to see better detail, and Happy SkyWatch Friday.

Around Here

I took a creek walk yesterday afternoon., and managed to see this Wood duck drake before he spotted me. Something I rarely can do. They have to be my all time favorite duck. We found a dead one several years ago on our upper trail, and I was so amazed at the beautiful colors. I did get a couple more shots before he swam away.
About this time he did see me and off he went.

Of course Azrael always accompanies me on my walks. These 2 stumps are where we sit in the early spring to do some birdwatching before too many leaves come out on the trees.
Some fungi on a fallen log.
It's time to get the last of the higher up apples. We picked up this vintage apple picker many years ago at an auction, and it works great!
It's going to be another nice day, BUT looking at the extended forecast there is some pretty unsure weather coming early next week, cold and possible SNOW, so we'd better enjoy these good ones while we can.
Have a wonderful day all.

Watery Wednesday

Sunday was a fabulous day weather wise, and we decided to take a ride to the Barcelona Harbor. It's on the South shores of Lake Erie, and about 40 miles NorthEast of Erie, Pa in New York State. There is a big cement pier there where you can drive right down to the water.
We saw this small flock of Canada geese swimming past a lonely sailboat.
There were many "bottoms up" as they searched for food.
This Ringed Gull wasn't very happy with us, since we didn't bring any treats!
In the distance there were hundreds of gulls sitting on this break wall.
Have a wonderful Watery Wednesday, and Thanks to 2sweetnsaxy for hosting this fun site.
