Out and About

Traveling around this week we got to Lake Erie just in time to see the US Brig Niagara, the flagship of Erie, Pennsylvania out on a 2 hour tour with 50+ school children. You will see another view on my sidebar. This is the lighthouse at the end of the South Pier on Lake Erie. It is no longer in service, but makes for lots of pictures.

These cute Mallards took turns resting and keeping an eye on me.

Good balance!

We took a ride by the Great Blue Heron rookery, and things are looking good with babies in this top nest at least. The day was rainy and foggy, so hard to get good clear shots.

The ground Phlox are in full bloom, but rain in the forecast will ruin them.

One of my favorite Tulips, and this is the only orange color I have.

These are cool too.

I love these little Spotted Sandpipers. They bob up and down as they search for food.

I hope everyone is having a great week-end. We're getting rain again. Kinda getting used to it.

Wednesday morning

Early this morning I noticed one of my orange Poppies was in bloom. Then I see a white one too. I thought I'd better get a picture since a t-storm was scheduled for our area in the afternoon, and the rain quite often ruins them.
Then we headed for Erie, Pa to visit the zoo. Gary wanted to ride the little train, BUT as soon as we entered the parking lot we see 4 school buses, and lots of kiddies lined up, and the zoo wasn't even open yet. We turned the van around and just as we started to leave we see the REAL reason why we changed our minds. See the next 2 pictures.

I bet at least 400 kids! No fooling! We waited over 5 minutes for all of them to cross the street! We'll go back some other day.

Later we decided to drive around the Peninsula and I thought I'd stop and see if the Owls had fledged yet. There was no sign of them anyplace.
These are the leaves of the Sassafras tree. You might not know, but there are 3 different leaf patterns. The main leaf has 3 points, another looks like a mitten, and the 3rd has the appearance of a tear drop. The fragrance is very strong and quite pleasant. Many years ago Gary made us walking sticks from Sassafras and they are still good as new.

We also spotted the US Brig Niagara out on a day trip on Lake Erie.
This white snow like covering on the ground is the yearly Cottonwood Poplar seeds the locals call "Fuzzys. It is everywhere, and the air looks just like a snow storm. You see it on the roads, in people's back yards, and everyplace. Also it is highly flammable. Last week Erie had several fires when this stuff caught fire near some homes. It gets in your nose too. Ah-Choo! !

I found this creature beside our garage. I have no clue what it is? Anybody out there have any ideas. It is about 2" long and appeared to be eating grass.

Ruby Tuesday

Monday morning we went to Erie in time to see the U.S. Brig Niagara sailing out through the channel on it's way to Lake Erie. The ship had on board it's crew plus school teachers from the Erie area. In the background is the U.S. Coast Guard, Erie station.
Happy Ruby Tuesday everyone, and thanks to Mary/the teach for hosting this meme.
