Wild Bird Wednesday

Well, it IS Wild Bird Wednesday, and these birds aren't exactly wild. LOL
I have chickens and sell eggs, and last weekend I traveled to Ohio to buy some Splash Cochin Bantam chickens to add to my hobby chicken flock. Bantam chickens are very small about 1/2 the size of a regular chickens, and their eggs are also very small. The little hens might weigh just over a pound when fully grown. I don't depend on their eggs to sell, but instead we eat them so we can save the larger eggs for our customers.
The picture above is the rooster Christopher, and I also got 3 hens.

This is one of the three hens yet to be named, and she is a ball of soft fluff...
Sorry I don't have any new shots of wild birds this week. I think migration is beginning here, so maybe nest week I'll see something interesting.

Wild Bird Wednesday

It's time to watch birds, and not much going on around here except the same birds that have stopped by all summer. I really haven't been anywhere to see anything different either.
This is a shot of a juvenile male Purple finch. It must have been a good summer for these guys, since I have lots of them.
We got nearly an inch of rain yesterday from the remnants of hurricane Isaac, and it was most welcome. Things were beginning to dry out again.

Wild Bird Wednesday

Taking a ride to Barcelona, New York on Lake Erie I spotted these Cormorants in the harbor standing on an old buried log. I first spotted them several weeks ago, and they have hung around all summer.

I'm not sure what this one was complaining about...

And then the other one swam away. Must have been something his mate said!

Wild Bird Wednesday

It's time for Wild Bird Wednesday again, and I just haven't found anything lately with feathers. LOL, SO I went back in my archives, and found this shot I took in 2009 down on the creek behind our home. I waited for several days sneaking down on the creek waiting for this picture, and it payed off. Wood ducks are very spooky, and they will take off at the very minute they hear something they don't like.

Wild Bird Wednesday

Taking a ride a few days ago to Chautauqua Lake, I saw this green Heron, but he had been closer, and when he saw me, he flew farther away.

Also spying me was this cute little Grebe that also swam farther away, and if you notice on closer view, I think he might have a fishing line wrapped around his neck.

Of course there are always the resident Mallards that will follow you everywhere looking for a handout.

Wild Bird Wednesday

It's time for Wild Bird Wednesday, and I haven't really seen any interesting birds to post, so this is from earlier this Spring. We visited a really cool little park in Ohio one afternoon. There are 2 ponds  and walking trails along with lots of beautiful trees and flowers to photograph. This Canada goose family saw us as soon as we arrived on the observation deck, and expecting a treat swam right over. As soon as they decided they weren't going to get any goodies, they promptly headed back out to the far end of the pond.

Wild Bird Wednesday

Well, it's Wednesday again, and I'm so glad Stewart is continuing this great meme that Springman posted.
I really haven't seen many birds lately. The weather has been horribly ( if you don't like hot, and I don't) hot and dry here. The birds have been staying cool I guess because they haven't been around as much. All except this Mourning dove that is apparently beginning a new nest. We have several Blue Spruce trees on our property and the doves love nesting there.
