Ruby Tuesday

When we went to Gallitzin , Penna earlier this summer on our railfaning vacation we took a days trip to Altoona, Penna. They have a large railroad yards, and it is where all the trains enter when coming down from the Horseshoe Curve. They also have a lovely covered walking bridge over the tracks where you can watch trains all day if you want to and plenty of places to take pictures. This sign is posted at both ends of the bridge. It's patrolled hourly by the police on bikes.
Happy Ruby Tuesday. Mary/the teach keeps this meme going . Pay her a visit and see tons more RED photos. Click on http://workofthepoet.blogspot.com

Macro Monday

It's Macro Monday again. Where does the time go?
On my walk this afternoon, I spotted this fungus growing on an old stump. I thought they looked like Cashews. LOL

SOOC

It's SOOC Sunday. This shot was taken last week when the creek out behind our house was high from the 3.5" of rain we had in 2 days.

Cicero at http://cicerosings.blogspot.com/ has given me 5 words meme to write down my thoughts. I hope this won't be too long, and my regular Friday's post Skywatch Friday is below.
Mother/ ing
This is a bit tough
In my life time I guess I have been a Mother to many . Not only did I acquire 3 step children ( all under the age of 10 ) a year after Gary and I were married, but 5 years later we had our own son. Over the years I’m sure I have made many mistakes, but I did the best I could and learned from those mistakes. At that time I was working full time and taking call at the hospital too. I also worked many hours on the week-ends.
We bought a big old farmhouse so the kids would have a place to play and roam. Gary worked full time too 30 miles from home. We had plenty of animals. A dog, cats, kittens, we chose to raise our own beef, chickens, and I milked our own goats. Lots of baby animals came along and each and every one of them was like another child to me. We once had 200 baby chicks in our utility room so they could be kept warm and safe till it was time to go outside when the weather warmed up. The baby goats, were many and during the 10 years we lived in that house I only ever lost one. I used to put baby T-shirts on them to keep them warm if it was cold outside. When Mama goat didn’t have enough milk or would reject the newborn I would bottle feed it till it was old enough to eat grain. We had a pony foal born one time that got his head stuck in the wire bail of a bucket. I didn’t discover him till several hours had gone by. When released he would only turn in circles, and the vet said he might never come out of this probably having suffered some brain damage. I watched over him for several days and nights walking him often out in the yard, and eventually he recovered fully.
I could go on and on, but you get the idea.
Apron
I have never been one to wear an apron. I like aprons, and especially the old fashioned ones that cover your entire front and are frilly. I remember my Grandmothers always wore them. Don’t know why I don’t wear them.., maybe I just don’t take the time, or maybe it‘s the sign of the times.
Frugality
Some descriptions of Frugality:
Reduction of waste- All of our vegetable and meat scraps go as treats for the chickens.
We take all of our discarded newspapers to the Railroad Historical Society. They in turn will sell them to help out their museum.
Curbing Costly habits-
We rarely eat out any more, and when we do we sometimes split a meal.
We have only been on one vacation this year. With the high gas prices, we take more short day trips like to walking trails around the area, train watching, picnics, and of course lots of photography.
Seeking efficiency-
This summer our son put up clothes poles for me, so now I can dry my clothes outside thus reducing the use of the electric dryer. AND they smell so good! Washing clothes in cold water also saves energy.
Buying a more efficient vehicle.
We have changed all possible light bulbs to the more efficient fluorescent ones.
In the evening I have “friendship” lights in several windows. They use the small 4 watt bulbs, and add a cozy look to the house still providing plenty of light. At times we use candles too, the good smelling ones of course.
We grow much of our own vegetables, and I can or freeze many of them. Cheaper than store bought, and so much better tasting.
We have chickens too, preferring fresh eggs to the month old ones in the store, and cheaper.
In the dry weather we water my plants with water from the dehumidifier.
Using barter- I have a good friend that trades perennial plants for eggs.
I sometimes do computer work for another friend in trade for a restaurant gift certificate.
House-
I think of a house as just a dwelling where you might spend a short time, but I really prefer to use the word Home. This is where everyone can feel safe. Where you can come home after a long work day, and even though you are dead tired, you can go to your kitchen and begin to prepare supper, sit down to eat with your family and thank God for a wonderful day.
Organization-
This one will be fairly easy, because I’m not organized. When I was working and all the kids were home I seemed to be able to get things done and in a timely manner. Now that I have all the time in the world, I find somehow there is just not enough time in one day to do all I need to do. I do try to organize my time so we can spend some time going on short rides to take photographs and to enjoy the outdoors. Since I began blogging I've had to get a bigger wrap around desk with lots of storage space. This has helped me organize papers, reference books, and my weather instruments I use for my “job” as weather watcher. Before this these items were not within easy reach.
I guess that’s about all. I hope I haven’t bored you with my life story. It has been fun. Thanks Cicero.

SkyWatch Friday

On a really cloudy and very windy day, I took this shot of the huge flag that flies at Perkins Restaurant. We are seeing these clouds daily, generating off Lake Erie and we're in for a frost tonight. At 9:30PM it's 33ºF - 0.5ºC
Thanks to all responsible for hosting this great site.

Fairweather Fowl

We took a ride to Lake Chautauqua and ate our lunch by the water. We were entertained by this little Pied Billed Grebe. There was so much foam near the shore and he was diving and coming up all covered by seaweed.

Drinking out of a puddle was this female Mallard.

Crows were there too begging for food.

On the way home we came across about a dozen Turkey Vultures eating on something in a field. This one was telling us to move on!. He didn't want me to stop and take his picture.
The water had receded on the creek trail and I was able to walk down there. in the afternoon.
I sneaked up on 4 Wood ducks all preening. Actually this shot was supposed to be last, after they spotted me, and flew away.

If you looked at my Watery Wednesday post from yesterday, this is the same shot after the water went down.
This Nuthatch paid a few visits. Here he is ignoring me.

Over the shoulder check on where I was.

Always on the look out for Azrael.
