Presque Isle, and Watery Wednesday

It began as a beautiful day Tuesday, but by 9AM it had clouded up, and was that way the rest of the day. Some light snow about noon, and now at 8:30 PM the temp. is 27º and it's raining. Freezing rain ! Coating everything. We'll let the wood stove go out tonight, in case there could be power lines down from the ice. More fun!
Well, this is the price of gas today. Up $.10 since yesterday. Here we go again! We had to take one of Gary's locomotives in for service this morning. so while we waited while they worked on it we took a ride around Presque Isle on Lake Erie. This picnic table looked so lonely just waiting for summer.
Hey Mary, look what I found... This Fox squirrel was enormous! Almost the size of Azrael, and he was eating seeds from pine cones. They must be full of good nutrients.

He didn't seem frightened, and sat there while I took some pictures, then he grabbed a pine cone and scurried across the road.
Back by the Coast Guard Station is a cove where the water is already frozen. There are lots of house boats there all locked in place waiting for the spring thaw and the return of their residents.
Some are quite nice.
This is a two story. I don't think I'd want to be out there in a wind storm..
A couple of guys ice fishing. The newspaper sent someone out to do a story and I heard them shout to these guys asking how thick was the ice, but I couldn't hear the answer. They haven't fallen through, so it must be OK.
A pile of sand used to replenish the beaches when the high winds blow the sand away. (I like white sand like on Florida's Gulf Coast.) LOL
This light house is out at the end of a long pier, and is not a working one, but good for picture taking. It was way too cold to walk out there.
This is a shot of the Bay ice. Not smooth enough for skating.
Looking across the Bay at the Erie shoreline.
This marina has all it's boats cocooned in blue plastic.
I took a bunch of bird pictures after I got home. There was a large flock of Pine Siskins that hung around quite a while. I'll post them tomorrow.

RUBY TUESDAY

Happy RUBY TUESDAY everybody...
Can you tell, I am a Yankee fan? This is in our garage. The price IS coming down!
Yum, lunch!
I didn't get very many pictures today. It started out clear and 6º. By 9AM it was up to 19º
Then it clouded up, and looked like rain, but the freezing rain went South. Later out came the sun.
This sky was around 7:30 this morning, and only lasted about 5 minutes. We did have rain around 6PM, but it didn't amount to much. More deer shots. Now that the geese aren't around so much there seem to be plenty of deer to photograph.
This doe wasn't hanging around.
Lots of Amish out and about today.
I had lots of birds, but the same old gang . Nothing new to show you.
Have a great day all, and be safe.

Saturday, January 3, 2009

It was a gorgeous day Saturday. After our oldest granddaughter and I took down the Christmas tree and picked up the remaining decorations, Becca, Grandpa, and I decided to go for a ride and get some ice cream. It was around 3PM, and already the sun was beginning to lower in the sky. It made for some interesting color shots. There were different cloud formations in each direction you looked.
This first one is looking Southwest. Another shot toward the East with the sun shining on these trees. The sky in the background was really dark.
We saw the same deer we saw the other day eating next to a large corn crib, and this time they stayed for a minute. The sun was shining on them too.
Then all of a sudden they apparently had enough photos, and decided to run away.
This little building was right next to the corn crib where the deer were feeding. Not sure what it was used for, but I liked the way the light shone on it.
On down the road, more deer feeding in this corn field.
They weren't too happy about sticking around either. Of course black powder hunting season is in, and that makes the deer really spooky. Can't imagine why. LOL

This picture is taken toward the deer shooting through the lens of Gary's orange sun glasses. Just trying something fun.
As we neared home the sun was setting. We get so few of these days, it's so nice to get out and enjoy them.
Freezing rain predicted for Sunday morning. Ugh !
Have a wonderful day all, and don't forget to get out there and take some pictures.
I had quite a few birds yesterday morning. I still have 3 pair of Cardinals. Usually they show up at the feeders either at dawn or at dusk.
Mr. Hairy woodpecker made an appearance. I haven't seen him or her for quite a while.
He played peek-a-boo from on the back side of the hanging suet feeder
Then he got down to business, and began to eat.

We saw these geese lounging around in this corn field. The owner had been picking the corn, and I'm sure there was plenty spilled on the ground and their tummy's must be really full.
We also saw some deer. Originally there was many more, but as we tried to move closer, most of them left.
Be sure to check out Gary's blog "Steam Across the Trestle" . http://steamacrossthetrestle.blogspot.com/ We took some cool shots of a train today.

SkyWatch Friday

I'm a little early, but its already Friday in many parts of the world, so--- This is a COLD shot toward the ski slopes about 2 miles from our home. It is at sunset although you'd never know it by the lack of color. Most of our winter looks very much like this. Very few sunny days. Some of the slopes have their lights on, and if you look real close you can see the tiny skiers.
Thanks to those responsible for this really cool site.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Happy Happy New year to everyone. The temp. out here is 3º. We have had 108" of snow this season.
I didn't get outside very much yesterday. We awoke to a blizzard around 6AM, and the conditions continued to get worse throughout the morning. We ended up with 6" of new snow. At least things are clean again.
This leaf was braving the cold all by itself. Lots of House Finches showed up to eat, and this one was reaching in really far.
There were 3 pair of Cardinals nearby.

Last but not least Mr Cooper's hawk made an appearance. He was far away at first and I almost missed him. I knew something was awry when all the birds left in a hurry.
Then he moved a little closer, and I can see his one eye looking at me.
Do have a wonderful day. Soon it will be time to get my pork and sauerkraut in the roaster. Yum !
