World Bird Wednesday

You can tell winter is getting close because this Sharp-shinned hawk showed up 3 days ago spying on my birds. I never see any only during winter, and this one was not very successful at catching his lunch. Twice he chased a bird into the Spruce trees, and twice he failed.

Ruby Tuesday

We pass this poor old barn many times when we go to watch trains, and every time I feel sorry for it, that no one cares any more. I wonder if once it housed many happy animals, and the smell of fresh mown hay was unforgettable.

Macro Monday

Happy Macro Monday from another one of my laying hens, and although I don't have names for all of them, this gal is a favorite. Her black feathers shimmer with iridescent green in the sun. She actually lays green eggs too. 6 days a week she gives us a beautiful pastel shade of green , and this her first year to produce. I also have some young hens that lay a very dark shade of brown. They are called Copper Maran, and as soon as they start to lay, I'll post some pictures.

Sunday

I don't have much to add for today. Just some shots from around home.
Mrs. Cardinal paid my feeders a visit and she and the Mr. show up mostly at dusk. I've had a Sharp-shinned hawk spying on the birds this week. I'll post pictures on World Bird Wednesday.
One of my laying hens persists on trying to fly out of the pen, so now she has had her wings clipped, and will be staying home. All my chickens are free range, but pastured to keep them safe from predators. They don't need to be running around out of their pen. We have Raccoons, skunks, occasional loose dogs, eagles, hawks, and I even saw a mink one day a few years ago. All of these would love a nice chicken dinner!
Here is one of the girls hard at work. She is a Golden-laced Wyandotte. A truly beautiful hen. This is her first year to give us eggs, and she is doing a fine job. I have 3 of these hens.
I love red berries, and am always looking for any to photograph. I have no idea what these are.
Here are some interesting seeds from something I found on one of our nature trails. They are really fuzzy.
A beautiful day today, but cool. We are sneaking along through December, but there is that white stuff forecast for next week :~(

Weekend Reflections

This week one day the wind was absent and reflections on a nearby lake were everywhere. I didn't find too places to stop though. This is a boat house belonging to one of the residents , and all the boats have been put in dry dock for the winter.

Skywatch Friday

The other day driving home from the feed mill, the sky suddenly turned ugly. It had been sunny for the past few hours, but the threat of snow was in the forecast.
Off to the West it was very dark, and the winds began to pick up. We hurried home not wanting to be caught in a storm.
You can see the edge of the cold front as we neared home. We did make it safely, and it snowed over night, but only left us with 3/4".

We had some snow today

I don't have too much to add today, but I thought this picture was funny. It is of my sister's rescue cat Callie watching this Chipmunk on Thanksgiving. It was so cute. She sat there for the longest time.
This is the runway the beavers have made in the creek overflow behind our home. They are chewing trees again, and floating them down this waterway to the main creek. Sometimes they even drop a tree on the side of the road, and just leave it.
My wildbird population has dropped off quite a bit, but the Titmice still hang around, and make for some great photo subjects..

It was really windy today and this guy had a bad hair moment...

The snow we got didn't amount to much. Coating everything, but it's only a warning you know. Have a great rest of the week.
