WOODYNOOK CREATIONS

It's Thursday

Last Sunday for Mother's Day I went to the Orchid show in Erie, Penna. There were so many gorgeous flowers on display, and all of them had won ribbons. Some of the displays were so creative using drift wood, water, and lots of mosses. I forgot to write down all the names of them, and anyway I don't know how to pronounce the names either. LOL

I have one just like this, and it is really fragrant!
This is one of the Orchids I bought. There were several vendors there, and every year I buy something from the same vendor. He has wonderful plants and offers answers to any questions you might ask.. This particular orchid wasn't open when I got it. The flowers are about 3" across and mildly fragrant.

About 2 hours after we got home, I got a call from the Orchid society that I had won an orchid! They had a silent auction at the show, and you put tickets into cans in front of any of the items on the table you wish to win. There were many items from statuary, garden tools, potting soil, books on Orchids, and  5 orchids donated, and of course I put all my ticket stubs in for the orchids. After the show was over they drew the winners. So we jumped back in the van and off to Erie again. This is the Orchid I won ( above) , and is different from any others I have. These flowers are about 2" across, and have no scent.
Another  beautiful day in store. I hope to visit the local Amish greenhouse and see what goodies they have..

World Bird Wednesday

What an opportunity when I came across this juvenile Red-tailed hawk, and he posed for me. Of course there was a Blue-jay harassing him too, so he wasn't noticing me.
On my feeders today a 1st year male Rose-breasted grosbeak. I have several this year. Something new for me as I usually I only have one pair, and the adult males are so beautiful..
Now, just because it's on the bird feeder, and eating bird seed does not necessarily make it a bird.

Barn Charm

This barn is an operating farm, milking lots of Holsteins, and is not too far from our house. I see it each time we go for groceries.

Macro Monday

It's time for Macro Monday again, and we all have these little honeys in our yards. In my yard the dandelions are almost all spent and then we will be free from their fuzzies till next Spring.

Happy Mother's Day

Before I begin my blog, I want to wish all the Mom's out there a very Happy Mother's Day. My Mom was a wonderful and such a special person, and I miss her so much.
I took this picture this afternoon around 2PM. I found a ring or halo around the sun. These rings are caused by ice crystals within thin cirrus clouds,
While watching trains last week, I spotted this Green Heron flying over our van and landed on this log not far from the tracks.
Still hanging around my yard is this male Indigo Bunting. He usually will only be here a week or so, but so far I'm hopeful he will like this area and not leave.

Checking out the Great Blue heron rookery, I finally could see some chicks. There are only 4-5 nests left and I still wonder how they remain in the trees.

Another regular visitor to my feeders is this female Rose-breasted Grosbeak. I have two pair, and would love to find a nest.
Have a wonderful day everyone.

Weekend Reflections

A day watching trains offers a good reflection when there is a mud puddle near by.

Skywatch Friday

It's been a very windy but sunny day. The temp never got out of the 60"s, but we'll take it. Beautiful clouds too. Tonight another frost predicted.
