This week

I have to show you all this mammoth Black Walnut tree in Erie County, Pa that is estimated by arborists to be between 270 and 300 years old. It measures 17 feet around. The large limb that stretches out to the left is 60 feet long and measures nearly 9 feet in circumference.

In our yard high up in a Aspen tree is a European starling.

Down on the creek trail I found a spotted sandpiper.
On Monday we went to the beach and discovered someone was running in his bare feet. The sun was shining, but it was quite cool.

The breakers where we were are covered in Gulls.
We also saw the resident Mute swans with their "kids"

This one hasn't got all it's white plumage yet.

Back at home the neighbors have the cutest donkey.

Finally yesterday morning a female Red-bellied woodpecker stopped by. I haven't seen one in 2 years.

I guess that's all for now. The beautiful weather continues. I see they are having snow out in the west, so guess what we'll be getting next!

Watery Wednesday

Last Friday it was a beautiful day, and we decided to search for beach glass. As you can see there are tons of dead leaves washed up on shore from those really high winds we had. That does lessen the chance of finding much glass, but I still had a great day.

End of the week-end

Looking around on the load of logs that were delivered last week, I spotted these cool looking fungus. They are really soft and leather like.

There seems to be plenty of Monarch Butterflies this year, and I can't resist taking pictures everytime I see one. Last Summer they were not to be found. This one is on Joe Pye weed, and I hope I can find lots of caterpillars to raise.

Searching for beach glass last week, these Canada geese really didn't offer to help!

This Robin sat for the longest time on the telegraph pole. Soon they will be making their way South, and all of a sudden we'll realize that they are gone till next Spring!

I bought a quart of Blackberries yesterday, and they are huge. Quite pricey too I might add so I'll be using them sparingly..

Our kids planted yellow Watermelon, and this one is nearly ready. Yum, yum.

Another nice day

It was a beautiful day although the temperature never got above 52ยบ, it still felt quite cool.
The Turkey vultures are back and searching for Food! On the Llama trail those beavers are gnawing down more trees. I have yet to see any of them since they work 3rd shift! Need to get that game camera set up...
Also on the trail the Daylilies are poking through the ground.

On a recent trip to the beach, where we're waiting for the snow to disappear so we can resume our beach glass hunt, there was plenty of Canada geese feet prints.

I believe this picnic table will need some TLC before it can be used this year.

That's all for now. I'm having some computer issues and I'm glad I was able to get this much on. Have a great day.

Ruby Tuesday

While down on the beach on Lake Erie a few days ago we came upon a HUGE sand mound. This is sand they use to replenish all the sand blown away on the beaches during the bad winter weather. Despite what the sign says, you will notice footprints to the left and they went all the way to the top which was at least 35 ft high!
Happy RT everyone. I hope you all are having a wonderful week.

More Catch-Up

Since the day Friday was another yucky one, these pictures are from earlier in the week.
This is the beach where we search for the beach glass, and this is what greeted us on a recent trip there. Lots of Canada geese, and Turkey Vultures together foraging through all the dead leaves on the shore. A little closer shot shows the geese somewhat uninterested in the Vultures.
As you walk along the shore and look up you see this tree and it's roots hanging out over the edge. I'm wondering why it hasn't fallen down.

The end of our search is here. The water and rocks make it impossible to get past this point. It's amazing how the water and wind have carved out the rocks.

The leaves were beautiful last week, and today they are almost gone. Only a few of the yellows remain.

On our trip home from the beach we always pass this corn crib in a field near a farm. I slow up, and put the window down, because you never know what might be nibbling at the corn. Sometimes it's deer, Pigeons, Turkeys, and Raccoons. There is an electric wire fence around the crib, but this buck gets through it somehow.

After a few minutes he has decided to move on.
A really simple but cool stone house. Very old too. Looks Civil War-ish..
Hay bales and Fall trees. The sky is clearing as I post this Friday night and the wind is picking up from the South. It will bring us some warmer weather and we won't have to build a fire in the wood stove tonight.
Take care, and have a wonderful week-end.

SKYWATCH FRIDAY

On this gorgeous day we took a walk on the beach at Presque Isle in Erie, Pennsylvania. In a couple months this beach will be really crowded with sun and sand lovers.

On our day trip to Ashtabula, Ohio we decided to check out the beach area too. We're always looking for beach glass, and since it was such a beautiful day we took a short walk.
Another shot of the lighthouse I posted 2 days ago. This is from another angle.
A cold front coming in.
There was lots of drift wood. Gary used to make driftwood lamps, and we used to collect lots from many of the beaches we walked.
I'm not quite sure what this is. It is full of holes, and really heavy. I couldn't kick it over.

OK, enough from that trip.
There are lots of Crocus blooming right now, and oh so many bees.
I bought 2 miniature roses. Can't wait for Spring!
The Pussy Willows are blooming too, BUT right now everything is under 2" of snow that we got last night. Tomorrow it will warm up, we hope!
